If you’re building your first Squarespace landing page or you’ve already created one that isn’t converting, you’re not alone. In this post, I’ll walk you through six common mistakes I’ve seen, and how to fix them so your page is optimized for conversions.
Before you dive into design, define your goal and your target audience, everything else should support that. This simple step helps create a clear direction for your page and keeps your content focused.
Let’s use an example. Imagine you’re an independent career life coach trying to get new inquiries through a booking form. Your target audience is young professionals who feel stuck or burned out.
Mistake 1. Too Many CTAs
When everything on the page is a call-to-action, nothing stands out.
If your goal is to get people to book a consultation, that’s the only CTA you need. Get rid of extra buttons like “Learn More” or “Read Blog.” They distract visitors from the main action you want them to take.
You can also remove your site’s main navigation to keep visitors focused on your single goal instead of wandering around your site.
Fix: Keep one clear CTA (like “Book a Free Consultation”) and repeat it strategically in a few key places on the page.Mistake 2. Unclear Value Proposition
The headline in your hero section should instantly tell people what you offer and why it matters to them. A generic message like “Welcome to My Page” doesn’t tell anyone what you do.
Your hero section is the most valuable real estate on your page—it’s the first thing visitors see. Use it to clearly state what you do, who you help, and how you help them.
Fix: Focus on refining your copy so it clearly communicates your offer and builds trust right away. Keep the messaging direct and benefit-focused so visitors immediately understand why they should take action.Mistake 3. Unrelated Content
Every element on your landing page should lead your visitor closer to the goal.
If your landing page links to unrelated content (like your blog or portfolio), you’re adding unnecessary distractions. Those can pull attention away from your conversion goal.
Fix: Focus on removing any unrelated or unnecessary content that distracts from your main goal. Keep only the sections that directly support your offer and help guide visitors toward your call to action.Mistake 4. Weak Social Proof
Testimonials can build trust, but only if they feel real and specific. A short line like “Great service!” doesn’t move anyone. Three meaningful testimonials are way more powerful than ten vague ones.
Fix: Focus on collecting 2–3 strong testimonials with a few sentences each. If you can, include a photo of the client to make it more personal. Adding a Google Reviews badge or a testimonial right in your hero section can also help build trust faster.Mistake 5. Poor Readability
Even if your content is great, poor readability can kill engagement. Wide blocks of text are hard to read, especially on larger screens, so aim for about 80 characters per line. Use shorter paragraphs, bullet points, and white space to make scanning easy.
Fix: Trim down your copy and avoid long walls of text. Focus on making your copy easy to read by breaking up paragraphs, simplifying language, and keeping your message clear and concise.Mistake 6. Poor Mobile Optimization
Squarespace’s Fluid Engine is flexible, but layouts can shift unpredictably between desktop and mobile views. Since many visitors come from social media, mobile may be your first (and only) impression.
Fix: Check that your text is legible, images are sized properly, and buttons are large enough for easy tapping. Review the order of elements in each section since things can get jumbled on mobile sometimes.Wrapping Up
Small tweaks can make a big difference in turning clicks into clients. By making these updates, your Squarespace landing page will feel more focused, more engaging, and more aligned with your audience’s needs.
